Drogheda bowlers on the ball in Westport

Drogheda prize-winners at the Indoor Mat Bowls Tournament in Westport, (l to r) Tony Lacken, Clare Woods, Peter Mohan, Marian Coogan, Tom Monaghan, St Joseph's founder member Mary Mcghee and Mary Mckenna.
A NUMBER of local bowlers did Drogheda proud when they competed in the major twiceyearly four-day tournament in Westport's Castlecourt Hotel.
The competition traditionally attracts players from all over Ireland, but Tom Monaghan and Clare Woods survived tough games to get out of their pool - on their way to winning the Green section.
Tony Lacken and Marian Coogan, likewise, lived dangerously to qualify but never looked anything but winners in the Red section, where Peter Mohan was a brave runner-up.
To complete a good day for Drogheda, Mary Mckenna grabbed the highest individual points score overall.
Incidentally, the year 2012 will mark the 20th anniversary of the indoor mat bowls game in the town. The late Joe Mcghee was recruited by Mell PP Fr Oscar O'leary to found the St Joseph's club in Mell, two years later Greenhills was formed and there are now up on eight clubs in the greater town area.
