Dunleer's Quinn on the boil at Lough Key

Wednesday February 08 2012

DUNLEER AC'S Martin Quinn did his club proud by claiming bronze at the National Intermediate Cross-country Championships in Lough Key Park, Boyle, County Roscommon, on Sunday.

Quinn and Kilnaboy AC'S Michael Shannon were involved in a titanic struggle for supremacy, before Jamye Rossiter of Clonliffe Harriers passed them on a downhill section of the course and went on to win in 37:36, with Quinn in third, six seconds behind and on the same time as the second-placed athlete.

Quinn had been building up to this event all season after recovering from injury and can be proud of the result.

Among the juvenile contingent from Dunleer, Jack Boylan and Shane Cheshire justified their selection for the Louth team (Under-15) last Sunday, helping the county to a bronze medal at the All-ireland B Cross-country Championships.

Running strongly from the start, they had to endure vey tough, muddy conditions. Jack came through the field to take 20th position, with Shane finishing in 29th.

Katie Matthews, Ciara Matthews and Aoife Holmes represented Louth in the first race of the day, the Girls Under11. Each of them showed grit and determination in the challening conditions and should be well pleased with their performances. -At the North Leinster Schools Cross-country Championships in DCU on Wednesday last, two Dunleer AC athletes, Niamh Murray and Gary Campbell, had great races to secure their qualification for the Leinsters in Santry this Wednesday.

Niamh represented her school Scoil Uí Mhuirí in Dunleer and finished her 3,000m cross-country event in eighth place, with the first 15 qualifying.

And Gary ran a super race to finish fourth in the Under-15 3,000m Boys race, representing his school Dundalk Grammar. Both these athletes will be very busy in the next couple of weeks with schools and club competitions.
