Holy Family's Leinster hat-trick

Wednesday February 24 2010

GERARD Nevin, Jack Butterly and Christopher Nevin all claimed winners' medals in yet another successful Leinster Championships for Holy Family Boxing Club.

Gerard Nevin, competing in the Boy 4 70kg division, was pitted against fellow Holy Family member Johnny Joyce in the semi-final and overcame his clubmate in a tight encounter, 4-1.

Nevin then faced Dean Gately of St Brigid's BC and showed great skill to easily dispatch his opponent 11-3 and take his third Leinster title in a row.

In the Youth 1 50kg category, Butterly received a bye into the final to face John Perry of South Meath BC and the Holy Family boxer produced a fine display, coming out on top 10-3.

Christopher Nevin was chasing his second Leinster title in a row and he began by comfortably defeating Gary Hand of Navan BC in the Youth 2 52kg quarter-final. Nevin then showed his superiority again in the semi with another easy victory, this time beating Darren Murphy from Paulstown 7-2.

In the final, Nevin met stiffer opposition from Tony Carthy from Marble City, Kilkenny. Carthy put Nevin under pressure, but the Holy Family boxer kept his shorter opponent at bay with some great shots to pick-up a 5-1 win.

On a very successful weekend, the Ballsgrove-based club also picked up two runners-up medals, as Alan Davies (Boy 4 44kg) and Jonathan McCabe ( Youth 2 46kg) were unlucky to fall at the final hurdle.
