Holy Family's Leinster joy

HOLY Family BC picked up another three titles after a successful weekend at the Leinster Championships in Dundalk.
Mikey, Christy and Patrick Nevin were victorious to increase their club's tally to six provincial titles to date during 2010 and progress to the National Championships, which are being held next month.
First up for the Ballsgrovebased club was Mikey Nevin in the Boy 2 31kg division and he made light work of his semifinal opponent, Conor Dempsey from Royston BC, with some aggressive boxing to stop him in the second round.
Mikey, who picked up a Louth title in the same division a fortnight ago, then faced Jack Higgins from Tolerton BC in the decider and again the Holy Family boxer fought on the front foot to overcome his opponent on a 4-1 score.
In the Boy 2, 50kg category Christy Nevin – who was also successful at the recent Louth Championships – received a bye into the provincial decider to face Darren Murray from Clann Naofa BC, Dundalk.
The Holy Family fighter didn't take long to dispatch of the hometown boxer, forcing the Clann Naofa corner to throw in the towel at the end of the opening round, after a flurry of left hands left Murray struggling.
It was a all-local affair in the Boy 3 46kg semi-final as the Holy Family's Patrick Nevin faced Gary Aylward from Collon/Philipstown BC and the Drogheda boxer came out on top with a first round stoppage.
The win gave Nevin the chance of revenge against Colin Culley from St David's BC, Naas who defeated him in the same competition last year.
After a tight opening, Culley led 1-0 at the first bell but Nevin's attacking style began to break down the Naas boy's defence in the second and he took a slender 3-2 advantage going into the final round.
Nevin

to
push his opponent back and landed some impressive shots to extend his lead and eventually finish 7-4 in front to take home the title.
Shane Leslie, William Joyce, Christy Nevin (Boy 1) and Vasyl Chechensky also competed in the championships but they were unfortunate, despite some impressive displays, to go home emptyhanded.
Last weekend's winners will now go on to the National Boys Championships next month, while Gerard Nevin, Jack Butterly and Christopher Nevin will weigh-in for the Boy4 and Youth Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday.
