Lightning strive to generate a storm
Wednesday September 08 2010
YOU could say that the 'Lightning' is about to strike Drogheda and the surrounding areas – and it's nothing to do with the tail end of Hurricane Earl that wreaked havoc on the other side of the Atlantic.
Newly-formed American football team Drogheda Lightning will be holding player trials for four Saturdays during October at Rathmullen Park from noon until 3pm.
General manager of the club Russell Kerley expects to develop his existing squad by attracting additional talent from the locality, and this is an opportunity for Louth and Meath people with a genuine passion for watching the game on Sky Sports to actively participate.
The only requirement is that players/hopefuls will be 18 years or over by February 2011, while the participants will need to bring a pair of studded football boots and a tracksuit.
During the trials the club would like to attract people who would consider joining Drogheda Lighning's gameday management team or undertake some coaching. Full training and support will be provided for anyone who is interested in these two critical areas.
American Football has been steadily growing over the past 10 years in this country, with teams from Cork in the south to Carrickfergus north of the Border. Irish players have also had the chance to play and study in the USA and our teams are enjoying success both domestically and in Europe.
