CYCLING

Wednesday February 24 2010

COUNTY Louth has the honour of hosting the North East's first cycling event of 2010 when Cuchulainn CC in Dundalk stages the Paddy Neary Memorial Race at 1pm on Sunday.

Traditionally, Navan Road Club would always promote the first event of the new season, but this year because Cuchulainn is celebrating its 75th birthday the action will begin from Dowdallshill GFC. The race, which will be held on a handicap basis, will cover six laps of the Dundalk/ Knockbridge/Dundalk circuit, a total distance of 84km.

Poor weather in recent weeks has meant that preseason training has been severely curtailed, and so as cyclists from all provinces line up on Sunday it will be the first time in decades that they will be all on an equal footing due to the lack of preparation. It will be a lottery, with no certainty as to who will emerge as victor.
