COLLON/Philipstown BC had boxers competing in the Leinster Championships and Michael Andrews tournament recently, with some mixed fortunes.
Most of the action was in the latter competition at the National Stadium in Dublin, starting at 52kg Boy 2 where Eoin Dillon beat Tom Doran ( Tolerton BC, Carlow) on a computer score of 8-2 in the semi-finals.
That set up a decider against 2009 All-Ireland champion Patrick Joyce, and it proved a bridge too far, Eoin losing 9-6, but he had the more experienced fighter on the back foot for the three rounds.
At 27kg Boy 1, Dylan Carter lost out 6-4 to the stronger Chris O'Grady (Clann Naofa, Dundalk), while at 33kg Boy 1 Patrick Hamill lost his semifinal 8-6 against Hugh Nevin (Portlaoise).
Moving up to 39kg, Pat Usher lost to Glen Holmes (Corinthians), while Alan Downey (33kg) put up a great show over three rounds before being pipped 9-7 by AllIreland champion John Maughan (Ballymun).
At 46kg Boy 3, Gary Aylward also faced a national champion from Ballymun in Gary McDonagh and lost 9-2, while Niall Carrie (Boy 3 63kg) lost out 12-6 to Mick McEneaney (Brosna BC, Offaly) in his semi-final.
At the Leinster Youths Championships, held in Athy, County Kildare, Jamie Mulholland made a winning start when he beat Colm Corcoran (Callan BC, Kilkenny) 9-4 in the semifinals ( Youth 2 75kg).
But there was disappointment in the decider as the spoiling tactics of Dean Kennedy ( St Michael's, Wexford) knocked the Louth fighter out of his stride and he eventually went down 9-7.
