Racing returns to Slane
CYCLING
AFTER an unusually early start to the 2010 cycling season at Dundalk last week, there are two races due to be held in County Meath over the coming weekend.
On Saturday, Dublin Wheelers CC will promote the 90km Mick Lally Memorial race, starting from the Dunboyne AC at 10am. Then, on Sunday Navan Avonmore Road Club promote the annual Cycleways Cup Races. The race headquarters will be located at Navan Rugby Club where the sign-on will be open from 10.15.
The cyclists will then proceed to the start line on the Kingscourt road at Proudstown. The first race to leave the start line at 12.50 will be the A+, A1 and A2 categories and these will complete three laps of the KilberrySlane Hostel, Woodtown, Kilberry circuit, totalling 66 miles. Approximately 10 minutes later the A3 race will follow and complete two laps of the same circuit and finally the A4 race will depart at 1.10 from the line and complete two laps â?“ total 44 miles.
Race organisers have informed the cyclists that because of traffic diversions due to the closure of the main Navan to Slane road and the subsequent increased oncoming traffic on the Kilberry to Slane part of the circuit, they appeal to all to exercise caution.
The finish of the races will be held on the Navan side of Wilkinstown on the uphill straight, 600 metres after the level crossing.
In Dundalk on Sunday where Cuchulainn Cycling Club promoted the Paddy Neary Memorial Handicap Race, victory went to rising star Philip Lavery, with Stamullen M Donnelly rider Craig Sweetman in a very creditable fourth.
