CYCLING

Wednesday March 17 2010

AFTER a 15-year gap, Clonard Cycling Club, which is situated on the Meath/Kildare border, returned to the scene last Saturday morning and held their first open road race.

The race known as Ras Naomh Finnian was held on a handicap basis over a distance of 80k taking the huge field of 170 riders out the Galway road to Kilbeggan and back to the start point in Clonard.

Race organiser, Alan Maye took control of the handicaps and dished out a generous handicap to the 4th category riders, who took full advantage of the time gap, maintaining a nice lead of 1-minute over the field which they held to the finish line where Ivan McAvinchey from DTC/Orwell CC was first.

Fastest time in the race went to Robert Moore from Stamullen M Donnelly Road Club. This was just reward for Moore who was at the front line throughout the entire race. He was taken out of the Cycleways Cup race last Sunday in Navan in the early part of the race when a rider's gears got entangled in his wheel.

On Sunday the action switched to Kildare where the Newbridge Credit Union GP was held. Here many locals performed well in the various races. In the Senior A1 Race, former Meath 'superstar' Philip Cassidy (Engrave.ie/Dunboyne CC) finished 7th in a huge field.

On Sunday Bohermeen CC promote the annual Waller Cup races, starting at 11am.
