Wednesday February 17 2010

DUNLEER's juvenile athletes were busy at the weekend competing in the annual Blackrock AC Cross-Country event.

Oisín Cheshire was first up in the under 7 race, finishing a very impressive third on this occasion, while clubmate Kyron Kelly was fourth in the under 9 boys event.

Next up were the girls under-11 runners and Emma Cheshire led from gun to tape to win, with Seaghna Campbell in third and Seoda Matthews fifth. These girls were backed by Aoife Howard and Louise Clarke who helped the team finish in first place.

The boys under-11 event proved another great race for Dunleer AC, with Liam Connaughton running strongly to record a great win over 1,000 metres.

Liam was followed by Kevin Ledwith in seventh and Conor Matthews in eighth, with teammates Ronan Kelly, Simon Kelly, Ryan Kelly, Thomas Clarke, Ronan Sands and Shane Kelly all following in close succession. The boys were delighted with their second place in the team event.

In the boys under-13 race, Brendan Haak, Rory Meehan and Andrew Clarke ran very well, coming home silver medallists in the team event.

In the boys under-15 event Shane Cheshire ran a great race to finish in third place, with teammate Conor Byrne following closely behind.

The girls under-15s produced another bronze individual for Dunleer AC, with Kirsty Mc Donnell running a gutsy 1500m to take third, followed by clubmate Niamh Connaughton, running very impressively over this distance.

In the under-17 section, Sarah Haak brought home the bronze medal ahead of her teammate Julie Mc Donnell, while in the boys under-17 race Ciarán Connaughton ran very well to round off a great day for the club.
