CONGRATULATORY texts were winging their way by the dozen from Drogheda to Brisbane yesterday ( Tuesday) after local lad Niall Ronan was picked to play for Ireland against Australia. Saturday's Test will be the biggest match in the 27-yearold Piltown native's rugby career, and his inclusion in the starting XV has delighted everyone associated with his former club Boyne.

HIS summer holiday plans have had to be put on hold, but Niall Ronan certainly isn't complaining after he was drafted into the Ireland squad for this month's summer tour to New Zealand and Australia. An injury to Leinster's Kevin McLaughlin has handed Ronan this 11th-hour opportunity, and a year almost to the day since he won his first and only two international caps against Canada and the USA, the 27-year-old forward's dreams of facing two of the most respected nations in world rugby could now become reality.

BOYNE Under-19s' efforts to add the Leinster Culliton Cup to the Towns Cup won by their seniors came up just short in this entertaining decider at Donnybrook last week. Opponents Enniscorthy were the more fancied side, but Boyne – coached by first-team players Cillian Duffy and Niall Kerbey – shaded the early exchanges on a pitch that resembled a sandy beach in parts.
