Crescent in good shape for Shield's knockout stages
DROGHEDA Crescent all but booked their place in the knockout stages of the O'Neill Shield, despite an unconvincing display against highergrade opposition.
One of the Meath and District League's new clubs, Drogheda struggled to cope with Rossin's style of play, but still took an early lead when a great through ball was expertly finished to the net by flying winger Lee Kavanagh.
However, Division 3 side Rossin hit back almost immediately with a wonder strike which thundered to the net from all of 35 yards.
Crescent upped there game slightly in the second half and forced a concession of corners, one of which led to the winner, Paddy O'Boyle rising uncontested to head a Jason Johnston set piece to the net in the 70th minute.
The home side managed to play out the remaining time without being seriously troubled, with Kavanagh and Jason O'Boyle their best players on the day. DROGHEDA CRESCENT: Gareth Smith; Jason O'Boyle, Tommy O'Boyle, Keith Collins, Declan O'Brien; Malcolm Smith, Graham Reynolds, Paddy O'Boyle, Lee Kavanagh; Jason Johnston, Darren Boyle. Subs: Albert Grennan for Kavanagh, JP O'Boyle for Boyle, Kevin Hoey for Johnston.
