Drogheda hungry for more success
DUBLIN & DISTRICT SCHOOLBOY LEAGUE NAAS..............................3 DROGHEDA BOYS...........5
DROGHEDA Boys faced newly promoted Naas AFC in this DDSL Under-12 Major clash on Saturday and would have been excused a slow start after the long drive – but instead they bossed the game from the off.
Their early pressure paid off when a neat ball from defence from Aaron McDonagh found Danny Burnell and he beat his man by the corner and gave a sublime cross over the keeper for Sean Bannon to slot home.
There was better to come from the in-form Bannon when he got hold of the ball from Ahu Obahkan near the the half-way line, beat a man and let rip from all of 40 yards to lob the keeper on his line.
For the second week in a row, though, Drogheda then fell asleep and let Naas in with two quick replies, the second of those a cracker of a free kick which gave Evan Farrell no chance.
Drogheda knew they had to up their game, and right on cue Cathal Doyle popped up from defence to score the goal of the match when he drilled a ball from the edge of the box low and hard into the Naas net.
It was no more than Drogheda deserved, and with the score back in their favour they scored their fourth just before half-time when a good lay-off from the impressive Sean Duffy found Obakhan on the edge of the box, and with his back to goal he turned quickly and instinctively found the top corner – 4-2 at the break.
The second half saw the boys extend their lead when sub Graham White's shot on goal was saved on the line and the rebound was calmly finished by Obakhan.
The boys were promised a trip to the shop on the way home if they won by three goals or more, but with Daryl McDonagh in particular writing his shopping list they were left disappointed when a late strike from the home side saw them pull back to within two goals.
Overall, this was a good display from Drogheda and the win keeps them in touch with the top of the table – even if they did go home hungry!
