Reserves hit Shelbourne for six

Wednesday September 01 2010

THE first team may have been shy in front of goal recently, but there were no such problems for Drogheda United reserves last Saturday as they put Shelbourne to the sword.

Chris Malone's team, weakened for most of the 'A' Championship by the large number of players required for League of Ireland duty, went into this game in bottom spot in the table, but will take great encouragement from their display.

Leading 3-0 at the break, they gave Shels a glimmer of hope by conceding a soft goal early in the second half, but went on to hit three more before a brace of consolations for the visitors at the end.

Strikers Colm Smyth and Stephen Campbell scored two goals apiece and Derek Kierans netted a penalty for the winners, while the return from injury of Chris Kerr was a bonus and Paul Matondo also played well in midfield.

The reserves have a mid-week game in Tullamore next week. DROGHEDA UNITED: Paul Skinner; Corie Treacy, Eric Brown, Stephen Murphy, Derek Kierans; Nicky Foster, Kevin Ross, Paul Matondo, Ronan McEnteggart; Colm Smyth, Stephen Campbell. Subs: Conor Healy for McEnteggart, Chris Kerr for Foster, Ciaran Hoey for Brown, William Woods, Alex Reilly.
