Rossin's away-day joy

Wednesday September 08 2010

DAMIEN O'Brien's first-half goal proved decisive as Rossin Rovers made a winning start to their Division 3B league campaign on Sunday morning.

Enfield faced into the wind in the opening 45 minutes and the visitors defended well before breaking the deadlock when a fine cross from Rory Crinion was powerfully headed to the net by O'Brien.

After the break Niall Coyle and Eoin Feeley both forced good saves from the Enfield keeper, and although the home side staged a late rally they were unable to breach a well-organised Rossin back four.

Best for the winners were Paul O'Brien, Keith Harding and Damien Carolan. ROSSIN ROVERS: David Rooney, Robbie Carolan (Dermot Lynn), Chris O'Brien, Ray Cromwell, Keith Harding (Andy O'Brien), Paul O'Brien, Damien Carolan, Rory Crinion, Eoin Feeley, Damien O'Brien, Niall Coyle. DONACARNEY completed preparations for their Division 3 league campaign with this comfortable Shield win at Seafield on Sunday afternoon.

Frankie McCloskey broke the deadlock with a fine run and shot to the top corner of the Donore net, and he then set up Brian Mullen who was taken down for a penalty.

Eoin O'Brien netted from the spot, but on the stroke of half-time Donore halved the deficit from a free kick to leave the game still in the melting pot.

It was nip and tuck early in the second half, before Trevor Reid sealed it for Donacarney, rounding the stranded Donore keeper and netting from 20 yards out.

Best for the winners were Declan Gibbons, McCloskey, John Judge and Lenny Sheridan. DONACARNEY: Paul Byrne, Peter Lamb, Val Ward, John Judge (Donal Coyle), Declan Gibbons, Darragh Kelly, Brian Mullen, Eoin O'Brien, Frankie McCloskey, Trevor Reid, Lenny Sheridan (Jamie O'Brien).
