U-12s prove too strong for Malahide

Wednesday September 01 2010

DROGHEDA Boys Under-12s got their new Dublin and District League season off to a great start with a welldeserved Major Division victory over Malahide at Gannon Park last weekend.

With the aid of a strong breeze, the Boynesiders dominated the early stages, to the extend that their goalkeeper Kieran Duffy only touched the ball once in the entire first half and that was in the final minute.

The Boys took a deserved lead when Jordan Duffy played a through ball into the path of Lee Kelly who coolly slotted home after 15 minutes.

Duffy then came close to doubling the lead on two occasions when he narrowly headed wide and then over the bar, but Drogheda did get their second goal on 22 minutes.

It was Niall Bedford who scored from close range when the ball broke to him from a corner kick and he powered home.

It was still 2-0 at half-time and the Boys, now playing into the strong wind, might have expected an onslaught from the home team in the second half.

However, this never materialised and it proved to be a very even contest. Malahide did managed to pull a goal back mid-way through the half, but Sean Hoey nearly added a third goal for Drogheda when he sped past the host club's defence and his daisycutter of a shot was brilliantly saved by the Malahide keeper.

This was a superb performance by all the Drogheda lads, but particularly outstanding on the day were James Conlon, Conor Haggins, Darren Tiernan and Conor Whelan. DROGHEDA BOYS: Kieran Duffy, James Conlon, Ryan Corry, Sam Reilly, Darren Tiernan, Conor Haggins, Calum Cooney, Niall Bedford, Conor Whelan, Lee Kelly, Jordan Duffy, Sean Hoey, Aaron McCormack, Mickey Nevin, Jack Thompson.
