Under-20s show how to beat Sligo
Wednesday July 28 2010
WHERE the first team failed, the Under-20s succeeded just 18 hours later as Chris Malone's Drogheda team enjoyed a very comfortable league win against Sligo Rovers.
The Boynesiders had an encouraging draw against Dundalk in their opening game, and they were ahead after only seven minutes of last Saturday's clash as Williams Woods ran onto a Stephen Campbell pass before burying the ball in the net.
Drogheda doubled their advantage in the 18th minute when Philip Kavanagh's crossshot from out on the left went over the head of the Sligo goalkeeper, and Campbell quickly made it 3-0 with a good finish after beating two defenders.
The Bit O'Red gave themselves a glimmer of hope when a mix-up involving the Drogheda keeper allowed them to pull a goal back on 37 minutes.
However, the Boynesiders bossed the second half and deservedly restored their three-goal lead on 85 minutes when some good one and two-touch football ended with substitute Sean O'Rourke shooting home from the edge of the box.
Best for Drogheda, who face consecutive away matches against Derry City and Monaghan United next Saturday and Tuesday, were Campbell and first-team panellist Derek Kierans.
DROGHEDA UNITED: Alex Reilly; Conor Healy, Eric Brown, Ciaran Hoey (Stephen Larkin), Aidan Bissett; Jack Kierans (Liam McDonnell), Philip Kavanagh, Derek Kierans, Kevin Ross; William Woods (Sean O'Rourke), Stephen Campbell. Subs not used: Conor Kelly, Joe Finnegan.
